To say Andy Weir came out of nowhere would be an understatement. We seem to be living in a generation of authors taking the world by storm with their first novels(Gillian Flynn, Paula Hawkins) and Andy Weir continues that with The Martian.

Andy Weir is an American from California. He grew up as a big sci-fi fan, and was a computer programmer working on the popular video game Warcraft 2. He actually has been writing sci-fi since he was around 22 years old, and has written articles and stories purely for his website.

Although it wasn’t a published novel, he gained a lot of notoriety for the short story The Egg. He then wrote The Martian which was published in 2014, and has fast became a huge hit with many comparing him to Ray Bradbury.

About The Martian: Made into a movie starring Matt Damon, The Martian is about a failed mission to Mars. Due to a huge dust storm, the crew on the ship are forced to leave Mars – and leave one of their own back there. That person is Mark Watney, who doesn’t survive the dust storm and is left on the red planet – dead.

Or at least, that’s what they think. Except Watney is not dead. He’s alive, all by himself, and out of contact with the world.
