Beverly Cleary
Beverly Cleary was an American author of children’s books. Born in April 12th, 1916 she sadly passed on the 25th of March, 2021.

She wrote the Henry Huggins and Ramona Quimby series. Cleary lived on a farm in Yamhill, Oregon; a town that didn’t even have a library. Despite this, Beverly loved to read, and her mother had the Oregon State Library send books to Yamhill. Soon, her family would move to Portland, where she went to school. Beverly’s first full-time job was as a librarian in Yakima, Washington where she observed children looking for the same kind of books she had looked for herself at their age – books about children themselves. She began writing books for children in order to give young readers something to relate to.

Beverly Cleary’s first book was Henry Huggins, published in 1950. Beverly has won numerous book awards and honours in her career, including the National Book Award, the Newbery Medal and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. If You Like Beverly Cleary Books, You’ll Love…

Beverly Cleary Synopsis: Two Times the Fun by Beverly Cleary is four separate picture books (The Real Hole, Two Dog Biscuits, The Growing-Up Feet and Janet’s Thingamajigs) re-illustrated and collected into a single volume. Jimmy and Janet are twins who aren’t so much alike. Jimmy has the idea to dig a hole, using a real shovel that grown-ups would use. While he’s digging, Janet, his sister, pretends to be a bird. Despite some differences, both of the twins love to be silly, wearing new boots and talking to the mailman, Mr. Lemon.

Will forever remember a book report given on the book, “Ramona the Pest” by one of my students. This is when I fell in love with the work of Beverly Cleary. Students mother was a kindergarten teacher at the school also. She overheard her daughter preparing for her presentation. She stood outside the classroom door and listened. She was so proud. Her comment to me, “I don’t know what you did to bring her out!” My response, “Beverly Cleary did it all!” Upon hearing of her death at 104 years old. I rushed to purchase more books. I love Beverly Clearly. She brought a shy student out.

Beverly Cleary was one of the first authors that I introduced to my first class in 1972. Today, I gave a Beverly Cleary book; My Own Two Feet, to my 92 year old in-laws. Thank you Beverly
