Barbara Mertz turned 85 on September 29th, so instead of her going to Cairo, Cairo came to her.

Barbara is better known under her pen names Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Michaels.

For the party, friends and colleagues dressed up as pharaohs to celebrate her birthday. The party took place in Barbara’s farmhouse. Guests included Joan Hess, Margaret Maron, Dorothy Cannell, Parnell Hall, Aaron Elkins and Sharan Newman.

Towards the end of the party, a dune-coloured sheet cake styled like an open book was presented, courtesy of Chef Duff Goldman of “Ace of Cakes.” The music began to sound, sparklers went off and a plastic figurine of Amelia Peabody emerged from the cake.
