The CW has ordered scripts for a new drama based on the Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations, which is to be executive produced by Reese Witherspoon and titled simply “Expectations.” The adaptation will take a modern spin on the novel.

In the original, an orphan named Pip encounters an escaped convict while visiting the graves of his family. Fast forward a few years and the convict is now wealthy and re-pays the favour. In the new version, a small-town girl moves to San Francisco, only to quicky become disillusioned with the big city until her fortune turns around due to an anonymous benefactor.

This is the next shot in a line of remakes from The CW, including remakes of Lewis Caroll‘s Alice in Wonderland, Wonder Woman and Sleepy Hollow.
