Florida Atlantic University is awarding Palm Beach Resident and bestselling author James Patterson with an honourary doctorate this May.

So far, it has been approved by the Board of Trustees and will be voted on by the entire board in January.

Patterson donated $60,000 in August to provide scholarships to eight students who were looking to become teachers.

“When I read about the excellent teaching programs at FAU’s College of Education, I was truly impressed, and I wanted to give a hand to these students as they strive to become great teachers,” Patterson said.

This was nothing new for Patterson, who had done similar things with Manhattan College, Vanderbilt University, Tulane and the University of Wisconsin. Patterson’s alma matters were Manhattan College and Vanderbilt.

“He has established himself as a writer interested in influencing the development of students who are readers and writers,” said Barbara Ridener of FAU’s Department of Teaching and Learning.
