For those who think they have writing talent of their own, the Surrey International Writers’ Conference Writing Contest has now begun. Hopeful writers and poets can submit their best work for a chance to win cash prizes totaling nearly $5,000. The deadline is September 14, 2012.

Authors Diana Gabaldon and Jack Whyte started the Storyteller’s Award to help celebrate the 10th annual conference. Both have been big-time supporters of the conference for many years.

The Storyteller’s Award, Non-Fiction Award, Poetry Award and the Writing for Young People Award each have $1,000 first place cash prizes. The winners last year were Kathleen Bullock of Ashland, Oregon, Susan Pieters of Burnaby, British Columbia, Charles Barker of Coquitlam, British Columbia and Jocelyn Shipley of Toronto, Ontario.

The conference is held every year at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel.
