Reader Mailbag: Secondary Characters Who Should Get Their Own Series
In the June 2026 newsletter, I asked readers which secondary characters in books should get their own series.
Here are the responses:
Chris: I always liked the character of J. Edgar in the Bosch books and would’ve liked to learn more about him and see how his life played out. He is so different from Bosch and yet they worked well together, mostly. Connelly writes such interesting characters who often have under-developed back stories. J. Edgar getting his own series will probably never happen, but who knows?
Jessy: Hi. I would love to read Bella’s daughter (Twilight series) have her own series of her adventures with Jacob.
I am listening to The Future by Naomi Alderman. It’s so good.
Linda: I couldn’t think of a second to carry on in a separate series. However, I did not like Win at all and really could have cared less to read his series. Just my opinion.
Max: For a secondary character getting his own book series, I nominate Nate Romanowski, Joe Pickett’s “force-of-nature” sidekick in the C.J. Box Wyoming game warden series.
Romanowski is one tough customer indeed!
Deana Jane: I feel Peabody from the In Death series should have a spin off.
Her and McNab could go on their own adventures, solving crime along the way.
Brian: Felix Leiter From James Bond series would have been a good series
Regina: That’s a resounding yes! I wish Stephanie Myers would write books about every major to semi-major character’s lives. They don’t have to be a series for each one but a fleshing out of the Twilight world like Orson Scott Card did with the Ender’s Game universe. Especially since she doesn’t seem to be writing anything new (that I’m aware of).
Phil: Hi Graeme. A secondary character who I’d like to see get his own series is Nate Romanowski from the Joe Pickett books by CJ Box. He’s complex character, known for his skills in falconry and his background as a former Special Forces badass. Nate often finds himself entangled in various plots alongside Joe Pickett, the series’ main character who is a Wyoming game warden. Best wishes, Phil
Pam: I do love it when a side character gets their own series – Virgil Flowers is a case in point. I guess I have too many of them to think about how awesome it would be to have them all get their own, popular series.
Virginia: What comes to mind as a secondary character that would make a great series comes from the Stephanie Plum series. The love interest Ranger would make an interesting series, I believe, because of what his career is – former bounty hunter, intelligence gathering and private security work. It has led to interesting and intense events in her Evanovich’s books that I believe could easily be given a life of their own.
