Fantasy author Scott Lynch was criticized recently for including a black middle-aged female pirate captain in his 2007 novel Red Seas Under Red Skies by some moron. However, unlike many, who might just shake it off, Lynch felt the need to put this bigoted and/or sexist idiot in his place.
