War Horse takes place during World War I when Joey, a farm horse, is sold to the army to go to World War I on the Western Front. Albert, the farmer’s son, is sad to see him go and Joey’s heart aches for him as he leaves. Joey is trained to charge the enemy, drag heavy artillery, and carry wounded soldiers off the battlefield. Some of the soldiers are not much older than Albert which makes Joey wish for home, and the danger of war makes him think that he might never make it back to him.
Another popular book by Morpurgo is Beowulf. The book tells the classic story of Beowulf, a Scandinavian warrior who fought three evils that were so powerful they nearly brought down entire kingdoms. This version of the story manages to cover all of the major parts of the classic story while still being child friendly. The story is rather enthralling with elements of heroes, monsters, and battles that will keep kids enthralled. The book features great illustrations by Michael Foreman.
