Stan Jones is an American author and Alaska native. He was born in Alaska and after a short time away in the American south, his family packed up and moved back to Alaska. He’s the author of the Nathan Active series of books which feature Alaska as the setting in each edition.

Jones had a very interesting life in Alaska. It was rather average at first, but then he moved to the nupiat Eskimo village of Kotzebue in his late twenties. There he landed Bush planes and drove snow machines as he lived among the native culture. From there he worked as a journalist in Anchorage where he covered the infamous Exxon Valdez oil spill. After leaving that line of work he headed to Northwest Alaska where he began working on his book series.

White Sky, Black Ice is the first book in the Nathan Active series. The small Alaskan village of Chukchi is the setting as two suicides happen within a matter of days. What exactly are the odds of that? State Trooper Nathan Active has his suspicions and they soon turn out to be correct as the men didn’t kill themselves, they were murdered. He’ll have to investigate to find out why and who did the deed.

He followed that book up with Shaman Pass. In this one, State Trooper Nathan Active has to deal with the native cultures of the village. When the murder of a tribal leader takes place in the village, he’ll need to track down all the suspects. He finds himself caught in a struggle between Shamans and the legacy of Natchiq, he’ll have to attain a deeper understanding of these ancient beliefs if he hopes to solve the case.
