So, just to be clear (and more concise), here’s kind of how the process would go:

The editor reviews the formatted manuscript for typos, grammar, then also for layout consistency (at this point, they’ve chosen the font that it’s going to be printed in and the galley that the author is going to be sent let’s them see what the pages will actually look like when it’s printed.)

The editor then sends it to the author for a final look to approve changes before printing.

While this is going on, the writer is also trying to complete the next book or even the last book in the series at the same time that they’re going over the galley for the first one (or the second if they’re being sent those gullies and they’re going over them while writing the third book).

At this point, there are a slew of notes that the writer has made regarding changes that the editor that has been assigned to their book wants them to make in the first one and these are changes that the author has made. However, the author has to also keep track of the changes that the editor has asked them to do and could accidentally go back to Notes that were made before such changes to the original manuscript occurred. It’s very easy to get lost in an overwhelming amount of notes and outlines, etc., etc., and the pace at which this is occurring can make it difficult to keep up with the demands placed on the writer.

Well, that was anything but short and sweet, however, I hope I was a little bit more clearer this time. The man writes good stories. So try to be a little forgiving of those kinds of errors that get through the publication process.

One last note: if you find errors in a library book (and this is a real pet peeve of mine for good reason), please don’t make any kind of grammatical corrections that you may think are correct. The author may have intentionally made them in dialogue to make it sound more like people actually speak, or you may not have taken linguistics or passed it with a high enough grade to justify correcting an author’s grammar. The reason I say this is because I’ve read several each child books were someone who uses the same library as I do decided to incorrectly, correct his grammar, and they were consistently wrong. It made it very hard to read because they’re crossing out the author’s text, and my back went into spasm from tensing up over and overwhelming number of incorrect “corrections” to legitimately good grammar. And these were corrections of word use. I thought I was going to go crazy.

As a writer (of no kind of fame whatsoever, as the only published writing, I’ve had published–other than poetry–has been academic papers), don’t get too down on the fellow for having those kinds of errors. I.I understand the Desire to point every one of them out, but it can be difficult during the publication process to keep track of your notes on where or how certain elements have previously appeared in the story–ESPECIALLY if the writer has made changes. Imagine going back to check your notes and finding a set of old notes from before those changes had been made. Yes, you end up with continuity errors.

HOWEVER, it’s primarily the responsibility of the writer’s editor to find errors and correct them. The editor, well proofreading the galleys will hopefully have found such errors before sending the final galley to the author, where said author can note any necessary changes.

Look at the publication dates for the series, and imagine that the author is most likely writing he next book at the same time that they’re getting the final galley for the first one and so on and so forth as he goes through series, all which were published in the same year. Then imagine him trying to keep track of points of continuity that have been changed, probably at the request of your editor. It’s overwhelming, at least it is to me.

Just saying, cut the guy some slack.

I can’t believe how many errors there are in One Mile under:

In this book he backed over his daughter; the other books he didn’t quite put the car in park

Karen in this book went to Virginia to care for her dad; the other books that was in Atlanta

If I find more I will add

“The Last Brother” & “Button Man” are one and the same, the latter being the USA title.
