Ali Land Synopses: Good Me, Bad Me is a standalone novel by Ali Land. Fifteen-year-old Milly grew up under the shadow of her mother, a notorious serial killer. After finally escaping and telling the authorities everything, she’s given a new identity and placed with a wealthy foster family and sent to an exclusive school. Struggling with the weight of her past and the complicated love she still feels for her mother, Milly simply wants to be good.
But life in her new world isn’t easy. Her foster sister, Phoebe, begins to bully her, a teacher may have uncovered her secret, and her best friend is vulnerable in ways that make Milly uneasy. As pressures mount, Milly must face a difficult question: Can she truly be good – or is she destined to follow in her mother’s dark footsteps?
Ali Land Reviews: Good Me, Bad Me is a remarkable debut! The story follows Annie, whose mother is a serial killer, as she navigates life in foster care after turning her mother over to the police. The novel delves deep into Annie’s inner turmoil as she struggles to understand how much of her mother’s darkness might live within her.
Annie is an unreliable narrator, which makes her journey between her “good” and “bad” sides all the more gripping and intense. While I found the ending somewhat predictable, I couldn’t put the book down until the last page. And I have to say – I absolutely love the cover!
If you’re searching for a psychological thriller, this one will definitely deliver. -Rik
Good Me, Bad Me is one of the best psychological thrillers I’ve ever read – definitely in my top three. The story grabs you from the very first page and lingers long after. It’s deep, exploring the part of ourselves that constantly questions and battles our inner instincts.
If you haven’t read it yet, do it now! I finished it in just two days during my final exams because I simply couldn’t put it down. I only wish I could forget it so I could experience it all over again. -I.H.
I realize I might be in the minority here, but Good Me, Bad Me didn’t work for me. I’m not entirely sure why, as I’m struggling to pinpoint specifics. Much of it felt like a drawn-out episode of Mean Girls, and the bullying was overwhelming at times. Perhaps it was the child abuse or the dysfunctional families—but those themes don’t usually bother me, as I read them often. There was just something about this book that left me unsettled.
The ending felt predictable and left me a bit disappointed. I know most readers loved it, but I just wasn’t one of them. -Casey
