Alma Katsu Synopses: The Hunger by Alma Katsu is a standalone novel. The wagon train known as the Donner Party is plagued by more than just misfortune. Struggling through unforgiving terrain with dwindling supplies and mounting tensions, the group is unraveling. Bitter arguments turn violent, secrets come to light, and a young boy’s mysterious death casts a shadow over them all. Whispers of curses and dark forces follow in the wake of every tragedy—some even suspect Tamsen Donner, with her strange beauty and eerie calm, of witchcraft.

As their journey west grows more perilous, so too does the sense that something is watching them. People begin to vanish without a trace, and the line between fear and madness blurs. Is a malevolent force stalking them through the mountains, or is the true horror coming from within? In the face of starvation, isolation, and suspicion, the Donner Party may not just be fighting for survival—but also against the darkness inside themselves.

The Deep by Alma Katsu is a standalone novel. Something is wrong aboard the Titanic. From the moment the ship departs, a chilling presence seems to shadow its voyage—passengers vanish, strange deaths occur, and an unnatural atmosphere settles over the decks. Among those who sense it are Annie Hebley, a young maid; Mark Fletcher, a troubled guest; and wealthy travelers Madeleine Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim. All are convinced that something otherworldly is at play. But before they can uncover the truth, the ship meets its historic fate.

Years later, Annie, now a nurse aboard the Britannic—a wartime hospital ship and the Titanic’s sister—encounters a soldier pulled from the sea. It’s Mark, miraculously alive. But his return stirs unsettling memories and long-buried secrets, and soon Annie begins to fear that what haunted them on the Titanic has followed them into the present. As past and present converge, Annie must confront the truth of what really happened that night…and whether the terror ever truly ended.

The Fervor by Alma Katsu is a standalone novel. It is 1944. As war rages overseas, Meiko Briggs and her young daughter Aiko face a different kind of battle at home. After Meiko’s husband leaves to serve in the Pacific, she and Aiko—despite Aiko being American-born—are torn from their Seattle home and imprisoned in an internment camp in rural Idaho. Life behind the fences is harsh, but it becomes far more frightening when a strange illness begins to spread among the internees. What starts as a common cold soon leads to sudden fits of violence, madness, and death.

When a secretive team of government doctors arrives, their presence only deepens the sense of fear. Meiko, determined to protect her daughter, joins forces with a grieving missionary and an intrepid reporter to uncover what’s really happening. As folklore from Meiko’s childhood begins to echo the horrors unfolding around them, she must confront the possibility that the true threat is not just human—but something far older and darker.
