Order of Jane Yolen Books
Jane Yolen is a prolific author who has written more than 365 books during his career. Yes, she has written more than one book for every day in an entire year. She writes books for children and adults. Some of her best known work is the Pit Dragon Chronicles series of books. Her most famous work is The Devil’s Arithmetic, a Puffin Modern Classic.
Yolen was born and raised in New York City. She attended Smith College before heading to the University of Massachusetts where she earned her master’s degree in education. She was later awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree by Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts in 1980. The honor cited that “throughout her writing career she has remained true to her primary source of inspiration–folk culture.” Yolen has earned many awards during her career including the Regina Medal, the Kerlan Award, the World Fantasy Award, the Society of Children’s Book Writers Award, the Mythopoetic Society’s Aslan Award, the Christopher Medal, the Boy’s Club Jr. Book Award, and the Garden State Children’s Book Award.

Dragon’s Blood is the first book in the Pit Dragon Chronicles series. The story follows a boy named Jakkin who is working in Sarkkhan’s dragon nursery. Jakkin has plans to steal a baby dragon so that he can train him to fight and earn him enough money to buy himself out of bond.
Jane Yolen’s The Devil’s Arithmetic sees a girl named Hannah who dreads going to her family’s Passover Seder. She is tired of hearing her relatives talk about the past, but she soon learns to understand the effects of the Holocaust. Hannah opens the front door to symbolically welcome the prophet Elijah, but finds herself transported to a Polish village in the year 1942.
