If You Like Patrice Caldwell Books, You’ll Love…

Caldwell’s first major release was the anthology A Phoenix First Must Burn. The anthology was made up of sixteen authors: Elizabeth Acevdeo, Amerie, Patrice Caldwell, Dhonielle Clayton, Jalissa Corrie, Somaiya Daud, Charlotte David, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Danielle Paige, Rebecca Roanhorse, Karen Strong, Ashley Woodfolk, and Ibi Zoboi. The book was meant to evoke Beyonce’s Lemonade, but for a teen audience. The authors were inspired by the great works of Octavie E. Butler and they drew on that inspiration to create a stunning narrative that centers Black women and gender nonconforming individuals. The book if filled with stories of strength and resistance, but also continues stories of love and betrayal. The idea of this collection is show an array of complex and true-to-life characters that are relatable while still being fantastical. The book succeeds in that and it is a good pick up if you enjoy stories of witches and scientists, sisters and lovers, priestesses and rebels.
