Torrey Peters is an American author of literary fiction. She is the author of Detransition, Baby, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award, and Stag Dance, a finalist for the 2026 Pulitzer Prize. Torrey Peters Synopses: In Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters, Reese once had the life she wanted: a stable relationship with Amy, an apartment in New York, and a sense of comfort that earlier generations of trans women rarely had access to. The only thing missing was a child. When Amy detransitioned and became Ames, their relationship ended, and Reese’s carefully built life unraveled. Now she drifts through a self‑destructive routine, trying to quiet her loneliness by seeking out affairs with married men.

Ames is struggling as well. He hoped that detransitioning would make everything simpler, but it cost him his relationship with Reese, and losing her meant losing the closest thing he had to a family. When his boss and lover, Katrina, reveals she is pregnant with his child and unsure whether she wants to keep it, Ames sees a possibility he never expected. He wonders whether the three of them could form an unconventional family and raise the baby together, and whether this might be a way to reconnect with Reese.

In Stag Dance, Torrey Peters brings together one novel and three stories that explore the rough edges of desire, community, and gender. The title novel follows a group of lumberjacks working in an illegal winter logging outfit who decide to hold a dance, with some of them volunteering to attend as women. When the broadest and plainest of the axmen announces that he intends to dance as a woman, he finds himself drawn into an unexpected rivalry with a younger, prettier jack. Their tension grows into obsession, jealousy, and betrayal, culminating on the night of the dance in a startling vision of gender and transition.

Three stories surround the novel. “Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones” imagines a gender apocalypse sparked by an unstable ex‑girlfriend. “The Chaser” follows a secret romance between roommates at a Quaker boarding school, where affection gives way to manipulation and cruelty. In “The Masker,” a weekend on the Las Vegas strip turns dark when a young crossdresser must choose between two guides: a handsome stranger who objectifies her in thrilling ways, or a seasoned trans woman offering a more grounded, unglamorous form of sisterhood.

Across these works, Peters pushes at the boundaries of trans storytelling, creating fiction that is sharp, provocative, and deeply attuned to the complexities of identity and connection.
