Chris Columbus and 1492 Pictures have acquired the rights to John Grisham‘s baseball novel Calico Joe. He plans to both write and direct the film himself.

“When I finished this beautiful, deeply moving novel, I immediately started to see the movie in my head,” Columbus said. “I knew that I had to write and direct Calico Joe. The story deals with universal themes of betrayal, tragedy and redemption. It has the potential to be a classic film and I am honored to be a part of it.”

John Grisham will be on the film as an executive producer. 1492 Pictures’ Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe will be on as co-producers.

Films Chris Columbus has directed in the past include Home Alone 1 & 2, Mrs. Doubtfire, the first two Harry Potter movies and many others.
