J.K. Rowling‘s The Casual Vacancy may not be hitting shelves until September 27th, but she has released a short excerpt to let her fans know what to expect.

“When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock.

Seemingly an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?”

How are fans responding to this relatively disappointing, but still potentially incredible new territory that Rowling is exploring?

Katherine Thursby, a devoted fan of the Harry Potter franchise, says that Rowling’s books “always ends up being way better than you they will. She never really lets on in her descriptions what it’s actually going to be about, to keep expectations low.

It’s probably going to be really good.”

That is not an excerpt. It is a blurb.
