A connection between director Peter Jackson and J.R.R. Tolkien has been discovered. It turns out that Jackson’s grandfather, William John Jackson, fought on the same battleground as a young John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.

“[William] did some reconnaissance work over there,” Family historian Christine Clement of Ancestry.com.au said. “His battalion was relieved by the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers, who Tolkien was with.”

Clement believes Jackson is unaware of these findings. “He knows about his grandfather having the DCM but not that Tolkien was there.”
