She is an expert at judo and can handle herself when need be. The character has also appeared in several Swedish-language films.

Helene Tursten is a Swedish novelist of Scandinavian crime fiction. Her novels feature the character Detective Inspector Irene Huss. Prior to becoming her writing career, Tursten worked as a nurse and as a dentist before she left due to health reasons. During this illness, she translated medical articles for a living.
