If You Like Amal El-Mohtar Books, You’ll Love…
Amal El-Mohtar Synopses: This Is How You Lose the Time War is a standalone novella by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading.
Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents, each determined to secure the best possible future for their warring factions. What starts as a taunt – a boast exchanged across battle lines – slowly becomes something more: something epic, something romantic, and something powerful enough to reshape both past and future.
But discovery would mean death for them both. The war is still raging, and in war, there are no allowances for love. Someone has to win… and that’s how war works.
The River Has Roots is the solo debut of author Amal El-Mohtar. In the small town of Thistleford, on the edge of Faerie, lives the reclusive Hawthorn family. They are bound by an ancient compact to tend the enchanted willows that sustain the town, honoring the trees with song in exchange for their magic. Among them, sisters Esther and Ysabel are the most devoted, their bond as deep as their reverence for the willows.
When Esther refuses a powerful local suitor and instead chooses a lover from Faerie, the fragile balance between worlds is disturbed. Long-standing protections begin to unravel, placing both sisters – and the magic that sustains Thistleford – in mortal danger.
The Honey Month is a collection by Amal El-Mohtar. February is a cold, dreaming month, but it was during those twenty-eight days that Amal El-Mohtar composed The Honey Month, a book rich with warmth, scent, and sun. Each day, she uncapped a vial of honey and let it guide her words, weaving poetry and prose that draw the reader gently into a web of memory, longing, and transformation. Within these pages, honey girls tempt and tease, lost things return, and sorrow stains the leaves – reminding us that not all honey is sweet. These bewitching poems and stories unfold a vivid world of magic and desire, where young women brush against the uncanny and emerge with wisdom hard won.
Pockets is a short story by Amal El-Mohtar from the January/February 2015 issue of Uncanny Magazine. Nadia’s life takes a surreal turn when everyday moments begin yielding impossible treasures: objects she’s never seen before, appearing in her pockets without explanation. With the help of her closest friends, she sets out to understand the source of these uncanny gifts. What begins as a curious puzzle unfolds into a gentle, enchanting story about creativity, companionship, and the strange wonders that slip into our lives when we’re paying attention. Amal El‑Mohtar crafts a tale that celebrates the magic hidden in the ordinary and the bonds that help us make sense of it.
