If You Like Anne Helen Petersen Books, You’ll Love…

Anne Helen Petersen debuted as an author with Scandals of Classic Hollywood: Sex, Deviance, and Drama from the Golden Age of American Cinema. The book works as a guide to film stars from throughout history and the scandals and secrets that they kept throughout their lives. America’s fascination with celebrity culture is not a new phenomenon. Unlike most people think, it didn’t start with TMZ. The gossip of Hollywood goes back to the best of yesteryear and features some great stories like the story of the smear campaign against the original It Girl, Clara Bow, started by her best friend. It also tells the heartbreaking story of Montgomery Clift’s fast rise to stardom, the car accident that destroyed his face, and the “long suicide” that followed. Other stories include why Mae West was arrested and jailed for “indecency charges” and Fatty Arbuckle’s descent from Hollywood royalty, fueled by allegations of a boozy orgy turned violent assault. The book is part biography and part cultural history as Anne Helen Petersen uses her expertise in gossip to paint a fascinating picture. The stories are contextualized with the history of the time, but are still filled with the salacious details of all the love, sex, drugs, illegitimate children, illicit affairs, and botched cover-ups.
