David Pilling Synopses: The Half-Hanged Man is a standalone novel by David Pilling. In 1395, the renowned French chronicler Jean Froissart travels to England in search of stories of valor and warfare to complete his life’s work, The Great Chronicle of England, France, Spain, and Adjoining Countries. But what he finds is a kingdom in decline under Richard II, its glories fading.
One night in an Eastcheap tavern, Froissart encounters a ragged beggar who claims to be none other than Thomas Page – the infamous soldier of fortune thought long dead. Known to some as the Half-Hanged Man and to others as the Wolf of Burgundy, Page’s name still echoes through the bloody battlefields of Europe. Skeptical, Froissart challenges the man: tell a tale worthy of your legend, and you’ll earn food, coin, and belief.
So begins an extraordinary recounting – of the Hundred Years War, of mercenary bands that ravaged Christendom, and of the ruthless captains who carved their names in blood. Through Page’s words, Froissart must decide: is this beggar truly the infamous Wolf, or just another liar spinning tales in a darkened tavern?
Nowhere Was There Peace by David Pilling is a standalone novel. England, 1266 AD. Simon de Montfort is dead, butchered at the Battle of Evesham, and the kingdom lies in ruins after years of civil war. Seeking vengeance, King Henry III disinherits de Montfort’s surviving followers, leaving thousands of men with nothing but their swords and a desperate resolve to reclaim their stolen lands.
Hugh Franklin, the son of a humble mason from Southwark, is thrust into the heart of this turmoil when Prince Edward, the king’s son and heir, recruits him as a government agent. With his family’s safety hanging in the balance, Hugh is drawn into a world of intrigue and danger – facing rebel knights, ruthless outlaws, and a mysterious, captivating Jewess.
As England smolders with rebellion and flame, Hugh must navigate shifting loyalties and brutal conflict to survive a war that threatens to consume the kingdom – and his soul.
The Wars of Edward I is a non-fiction book by David Pilling. Prideful, fierce, and accused of treachery – the Song of Lewes branded Edward I of England a leopard, and history has debated his character ever since.
This first volume in a three-part study follows Edward’s transformation from reckless youth to hardened warrior-king. From his early campaigns in Gascony and Wales to his capture at Lewes and triumph at Evesham, Edward’s path was marked by both humiliation and glory.
Concluding with his leadership during the doomed Ninth Crusade, this book reveals how Edward’s early trials forged the formidable general who would one day become the conqueror of Wales and Hammer of the Scots.
