As war seethes over Europe, Barbara Sinclair is frantic to escape from her troubled home which is an objective of the German Luftwaffe. She agrees to marry John, a childhood friend who is leaving to join the RAF. However, a meeting with Simon Farley, the son of a local industrialist, and an encounter with Spitfire pilot Alex Everton complicate matters. In this gripping coming-of-age wartime drama, Barbara must unravel the difficulties of her emotional relationships and the complexities of her home life amid rationing, bombing, and the constant threat of death.
A Suitable Bride by Fenella J. Miller is the first book of the Duke’s Alliance series. Lord Bennett Sheldon, The Duke of Silchester’s brother and heir, is shocked to learn that his shrewd father had gambled his way out of debt before he died. Bennett, who resigned his commission to become his brother’s heir, decides that he must find a suitable bride to save the family.
The duke reluctantly accepts this plan, and Lady Madeline, his younger sister, is thrilled to host a lavish house party with a selection of eligible young ladies. Beau, the duke, insists vehemently that Bennett will only wed a girl with a large fortune and impeccable pedigree.
Miss Grace DuPont does not want to tie the knot; she likes to run her stud and deal with her cherished ponies. Grace’s father, on the other hand, is determined to enter the ton’s drawing rooms because he believes Grace’s beauty and wealth will entice an aristocratic suitor.
Grace will have to pretend to be a member of Society and Lady Peabody’s goddaughter in order for Mr. DuPont to convince Lord Peabody to include her in the invitation to the house party. She sets out for Silchester Court with her stallion, three dogs, and a companion because she is compelled to do so by her father. She wants to keep a low profile because she will be kicked out if her real identity is revealed.
Grace is drawn to Bennett, but she is aware that when he learns who she is, he will be disgusted. He will be expelled from Silchester Court and lose his place in the family if he weds her. Can this problem be solved, or will Grace remain heartbroken?
