If You Like Gene Luen Yang Books, You’ll Love…
Luen Yang is the author of Dragon Hoops. The book follows Gene who doesn’t know much about sports. He understands stories and the hero’s journey and comic books, but he doesn’t quite get sports. Basketball didn’t work out for him, but now that he is teaching at a high school – it’s all anyone talks about. The varsity team is having a phenomenal season and as Gene gets to know them, he finds that the story of the team is just as exciting as anything he’s seen on a comic book page. He becomes embroiled in the story of this team and finds that the season is not only going to change the team’s lives, but his life as well.
American Born Chinese was a breakout novel for Luen Yang. The book is about Jin Wang who starts a new school where he is the only Chinese-American student. He does his best to be an All-American boy though which gets harder when a Taiwanese boy comes to the school. He doesn’t want to be associated him as he wants to focus on being American. When he obnoxious cousin comes to visit and ruins Danny’s reputation, he’ll be forced to transfer somewhere that can start all over again.
