Kacen Callender is an author out of Saint Thomas who is best known for writing YA fiction and fantasy. Callender’s book, Hurricane Child, was the Stonewall Book Award and Lambda Literary Award winner.
Callender was born and raised in St. Thomas, but attended Sarah Lawrence College where they earned a bachelor’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College in Japanese and Creative Writing. They later attended The New School’s Writing for Children program and received their MFA. Callender was an editor at Little, Brown before becoming an author.

Queen of the Conquered is the first book in the Islands of Blood and Storm series. The book introduces us to Sigourney Rose, the only surviving daughter of a noble lineage on the islands of Hans Lollik. Her family was murdered by colonizers on that island and have since enslaved generations of her people. She has the ability to read and control minds and is going to use these powers to get her revenge. Her plan takes a turn when someone is killing off the ruling families in an attempt to steal her throne. In order to enact her revenge, Sigourney will have to find allies among the enemies all around her in order to find the murderer before they get her.
A winner of the Stonewall and Lambda Literary awards, Hurricane Child is one of Callender’s best books. Caroline Murphy is a young girl that was born during a hurricane. That is considered bad luck and she’s had her fair share of it. Things start looking up when a new student named Kalinda comes to town and becomes Caroline’s only friend – and more. Caroline develops a crush on her friend and must find the strength to confront her feelings while dealing with the spirit that is stalking her through the islands.
