The Devil’s Highway: A True Story is the Urrea’s Pulitzer Prize nominated book about the absurdity of U.S. border policy. A group of men attempted to cross the Mexican border into Arizona in 2001. The men took a route through the deadliest region of the continent known as the Devil’s Highway. It is a difficult trek and the results can be tragic. Urrea follows their journey and introduces readers to all of the characters they deal with along the way.
Urrea’s book The House of Broken Angels is a celebration of family, specifically the De La Cruzes who live on the Mexican-American border. Big Angel is in his final days and summons his family for one last birthday party. As the party nears, his mother dies and the weekend becomes a farewell to both of them. The family shares the many inspiring tales that make up their family lore and allowed them to flourish.
