Nic Stone is an American author who burst onto the scene with her raw, emotional debut novel, Dear Martin. That book really put her on the map and she has followed it up with other well received novels including Odd One Out and Jackpot.

Stone grew up in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. She stayed in the area for college as she attended Spelman College. She was very active in teen mentoring after college which even took her to Israel where she lived and worked with kids. She returned to the US to start her writing career and the rest is history.

If You Like Nic Stone Books, You’ll Love…

Stone’s breakout was Dear Martin and it is a good one. The book focuses on Justyce McAllister who is an honor student and member of the debate team. He’s a good kid, but he’s also black which is the only thing the police notice when they arrest him. He’s released and not charged as he didn’t do anything wrong, but it’s hard for him to escape what he looks like in this world. He looks to the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. and attempts to answer the question of: do his words still hold up today? He starts a journal to find out, but what happens when him and his friend go driving will answer his question more than any journaling could.

Another popular book by Stone is Clean Getaway. The book sees a young boy named Scoob going on an unplanned road trip with his grandma. He’s not getting along with his dad so he is glad to go, but the further that he gets from home – the more he wonders where exactly they are going and if he’ll see his dad again.
