Order of Humanx Commonwealth Books
The Humanx Commonwealth universe is a series of science fiction novels by American novelist Alan Dean Foster. The universe includes his Pip & Flinx series, Icerigger trilogy, Founding of the Commonwealth trilogy and several “standalone” titles. The Commonwealth name is taken from the name of two species who inhabit the Commonwealth planets – the Humans of Earth and the Thranx from Hivehom.
Alan Dean Foster began the Humanx Commonwealth universe with his own debut novel, The Tar-Aiym Krang, which was published in 1972. The series is currently ongoing. If You Like Humanx Commonwealth Books, You’ll Love…
Humanx Commonwealth Synopsis: The Icerigger Trilogy by Alan Dean Foster includes all three Icerigger novels – Icerigger, Mission to Moulokin and The Deluge Drivers. The planet of Tran-ky-ky is an icy desolate planet and not the ideal place for a crash landing. But a kidnapping gone wrong causes Ethan Frome Fortune and his fellow travellers crashing into the planet. They are now stranded, cut off from civilization and must struggle to stay alive. In this trilogy, Fortune must confront terrifying predators and will form an alliance with a native Tran. While he looks for a way off the frozen planet, he helps the Tran gain admission to the Commonwealth and learns about their history. And just as he accepts that he will never get off Tran-ky-ky, he finds out that the temperatures are rising on the planet. This change leads Fortune to one more adventure.

My ebook edition of Flinx in Flux has a timeline going back to a billion years B.C. and forward to 13,000 A.A. (After Amalgamation), or about 15,400 A.D. This timeline can be used to put all the Commonwealth novels more or less in chronological order. Roughly, it goes Founding of the Commonwealth, Humanx Commonwealth books, Pip and Flinx, with the first of the Icerigger books happening just before the Tar-Aiym Krang but after For the Love of Mother-Not. The other Icerigger novels can be slotted in–at a rough estimate, they happen before Flinx travels to Alaspin the first time; Skua September helps form the Union of Ice the same year that Teleen Rudenuaman is killed on Ulru-Ujurr, but September is on Alaspin 3 years later in The End of the Matter. Since I haven’t read the Founding nor all the Humanx Commonwealth books, I don’t know exactly how they interweave; however, the timeline does mention things that I can tie to various titles in those series. Mostly, the characters don’t overlap, except occasionally as with September.
ok I own Pip and Flinx, Humanx Commonwealth and Founding of the Commonwealth, so if I want to read it all in chronological order how would that be done? Founding, Humanx then Flinx or a combination of these books. THis is so I get a full feel for the characters. thanks for any information/help.
