David Gemmell (1948-2006) was an English author of heroic and historical fantasy novels. He is the author of the Drenai Saga and Sipstrassi series. Gemmell began trying to write in the ’70s, but the end result was not quite what he desired. Then, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, he went back to writing, as his goal was to have at least one novel published before he died. His cancer was a misdiagnosis, but the novel ended up being published as Legend. Following his third novel, Waylander, Gemmell became a full-time novelist.

He went to have a successful career, with only one novel not making bestseller status – White Knight, Black Swan, a crime thriller he wrote under the pen name of Ross Harding. Notes: The novel Legend was originally published in the USA as Against the Horde; it was later re-published as Legend. Wolf in Shadow was also published under the title of The Jerusalem Man. Fall of Kings was completed by his wife, Stella Gemmell, following his death. White Knight, Black Swan was written as Ross Harding. Both graphic novels were adapted by Stan Nicholls.
