Lisa Shearin Synopsis: The Grendel Affair by Lisa Shearin is the first book in the SPI Files series. The SPI – which stands for Supernatural Protection & Investigations – is around to take care of what goes bump in the night. But some of these paranormal baddies are too big for even the SPI to deal with. Makenna Fraser is a Seer for the SPI. She moved to New York in order to become a famous journalist, but never imagined she’d end up as an undercover agent. Makenna can see through any disguise, shield, or spell that a paranormal pest can come up with. She tracks down creatures while her partner, Ian Byrne, takes them out. Most cases are fairly routine, but a sickle-wielding serial killer has been prowling the city’s subway tunnels. And the murderer’s not human. The fiend in question, a descendant of Grendel — yes, that Grendel — shares his ancestor’s hatred of parties, revelry, and drunkards. And with New Year’s Eve in Times Square only two days away, he needs to be taken care of as soon as possible. And if he isn’t found – along with the organization behind him – before midnight, the SPI’s secret is out and everyone’s time is up.
