Nikki Erlick Synopses: In The Measure, an ordinary morning changes the world when every adult receives a small wooden box on their doorstep. Inside is a piece of information that reveals exactly how long they will live. As news spreads across the globe, people are left to decide whether they want to know what the box contains and how that knowledge will affect the rest of their lives.
The novel follows a group of interconnected characters as they confront the consequences of this unprecedented event. Friends, partners, strangers, and public figures all find themselves making difficult choices about love, ambition, family, and the future. Some embrace what the boxes reveal, while others resist the influence of a prediction they never asked for.
As society struggles to adapt, the boxes reshape relationships, careers, politics, and personal beliefs. Through the experiences of its ensemble cast, The Measure explores how people respond to certainty, how they define a meaningful life, and what becomes possible when the unknown is suddenly removed.
In The Poppy Fields, a remote treatment center in the California desert offers a controversial solution for people struggling with profound loss. Patients are placed into an extended sleep designed to carry them through their grief, with the promise that they will awaken healed. The process, however, may come with consequences that are not fully understood.
Drawn toward the center are four strangers and a dog, each carrying private burdens and their own reasons for seeking relief. Ava, a book illustrator; Ray, a firefighter; Sasha, an occupational therapist; Sky, a free spirit; and a loyal dog named PJ travel west in search of the Poppy Fields and its enigmatic founder, Ellis. Along the way, hidden motivations, unresolved pain, and long‑buried secrets threaten to derail their journey.
As their paths intertwine, each traveler is forced to confront difficult questions about grief, recovery, and what it means to move forward after loss. Through their stories, The Poppy Fields explores the different ways people endure heartbreak and the lengths they are willing to go to in order to heal.
