Paulo Coelho is a Brazilian author of fiction as well as non-fiction books on self-improvement and psychology. Coelho grew up wanting to be a writer, much to his parents’ dismay – to the point where he was committed to a mental institution because he wasn’t following the path his parents wanted him to. After dropping out of law school, he spent time travelling the world and doing drugs. Once he got back to Brazil, he began writing song lyrics for various Brazilian musical acts.
Paulo Coelho began his writing career in Portuguese in 1974. His first book to be published in English was the non-fiction book The Diary of a Magus, which was released in 1992.
