Kevin Barry Synopses: The Heart in Winter is a standalone title by Kevin Barry. October 1891, Butte, Montana. A hard winter is closing in across the Rocky Mountains. The city is flush with copper money and crowded with Irish immigrant workers, and vice is woven into daily life.

Tom Rourke lives among them. He is a young poet and balladmaker, but also a drinker, a user, and a man whose habits have pushed him toward a dead end. Just as he begins to believe his life will not change, Polly Gillespie arrives as the new wife of Long Anthony Harrington, a devout mine captain.
