Laurie Halse Anderson is an American author of young adult, children’s and historical fiction novels. She writes the Vet Volunteers series. Laurie started out as a freelance journalist, writing for The Philadelphia Inquirer. At the same time, she began writing books for children and young adults. A few books into Laurie’s career, the novel that she made her name on, Speak, was published. The novel won several different awards, made the New York Times bestseller list and was later adapted into film (starring Kristen Stewart). Her writing deals with sensitive topics, but maintains a sense of humour. Laurie is married with four children and lives in Northern New York.

It’s the summer of 1793 in Philadelphia and Mattie Cook lives above the family coffee shop, along with her mother and grandfather.
