Stone and a Hard Place is the book that started it all in the Alastair Stone Chronicles series. Stone is a Occult Studies professor and powerful mage who tries to keep his two live separate. That all changes when an old friend asks him to take on a new apprentice. A university colleague wants him to investigate a massive old house where strange things are happening at night. It seems like an easy job for someone of his skillset, just put on a show and announce the house is clean, but it turns out to be something much worse as the house is not clean. A malevolent spirit is reawakening in the basement and he has a difficult job on his hands. Worse, a trio of dark mages are trying to free it and will seduce his apprentice to do so.
Another great book in the Alastair Stone Chronicles is Game of Stone. Stone is ready for a break, just a couple weeks of rest, but that doesn’t seem likely to happen. An ancient and malevolent set of magical game pieces has resurfaced and they are causing havoc where they go. In order to get the upper hand, Stone will make some unlikely allies, including a mundane cop and an all-female vigilante gang, in order to win the game.
