How to Wash a Cat is the first book in the Cats and Curios Mystery series. The book tells the tale of a deceased uncle and the surprising inheritance that he leaves to his niece. This woman, and her two cats, receives her inheritance and then is immediately drawn into a mystery surrounding his death. The investigation of the uncle’s death leads into the curios and novelties of a San Francisco antiques shop and manages to take the case all the way back to the days of the Gold Rush itself.

Hale is also the author of Adrift on St. John which is the first book in the Mystery in the Islands series. The book starts with Pen Hoffstra who is the manager of a resort on the island of St. John. Pen knows better than anyone that the resort and the idea of a tropical paradise is an illusion. That doesn’t changes when a young woman named Hannah Sheridan disappears as Pen is used to things not being as they seem to be. Pen points out that Hannah holds a resemblance to the Amina Slave Princess from the 1733 slave revolt on St. John- which sets the island off. The ghost of that slave princess has long been rumored to haunt the island and that really sets the island off in their belief that her spirit is behind the sinking and the disappearance.
