The Water Dancer: A Novel is the story of a young man named Hiram Walker who was born into bondage. His mother was sold away and he lost his memories of her, but he was given a mysterious power by her. When he almost drowns, that power saves his life and inspires him to escape the only place he’s ever known. He starts his journey from the plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the Deep South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North. He ends up in the underground war between slavers and the slavers, but he maintains his resolve to save his family.

Coates is arguably best known for Between the World and Me, the National Book Award winner. His work pivots from the biggest questions about American history to more personal concerns that a father has for his son. The book tackles big racial issues in American from those who were sold into slavery to the more modern issues of people being threatened, locked up, and murdered. Coates tells this story through the lens of a letter he writes to his adolescent son.
