A Taste of Sage was the debut novel from Yaffa S. Santos. The story starts with Lumi Santana, a chef with the gift of synesthesia where she is able to perceive a person’s emotions by simply tasting their cooking. Lumi was raised by a single mother who taught her that things like dreams and true love were just fairytales, but she has other ideas about dreams. This is why she decides to take a chance and open a fusion restaurant in Inwood, Manhattan. The restaurant serves the type of Dominican food that she grew up with while also mixing it with other cuisines that have inspired her. Despite her best intentions, Lumi’s venture fails and she is forced to take a position at a French restaurant in midtown under Julien Dax. The two don’t get along in the kitchen with Lumi being frustrated by his smug attitude. However, once she tastes his food and her synesthesia kicks in – her feelings change. Now she craves his cooking and the attraction between the two grows.
