I’m sure everyone reading this has some book lovers on their Christmas list. People who are sort of easy to buy for….but not really, right? I mean they may love the Harry Potter series – but they probably already own all books. Big Jack Reacher fan? Yeah your problem is they probably buy them as soon as they come out.

Sure – you can go for a gift certificate at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Chapters/Indigo etc – but that’s so impersonal!

What you REALLY want to do for the book lover in your family this Christmas is bring to them a WHOLE NEW SERIES of books they can enjoy. That’s the best way to do it – get them hooked. Then they’ll both love you for getting them into a new series, and hate you because now they have to buy more books!

Trust me – there’s nothing more exciting for a book lover than reading one book, loving it and seeing that there is 10 more by that author or based on that character.

So let’s go through the most popular characters and authors, and recommend some books based on those. If you want some advice on what to buy someone just post in the comments and let us know what they like and we’ll help you out!

If they’ve never read Linwood Barclay: Probably the most loved author here at Order of Books is Linwood Barclay. He has an amazingingly creative mind and writes amazing mystery/thriller novels.

They end up being the perfect Christmas gift for most book lovers though because he’s not as famous outside Canada! His standalone novels are AMAZING. Go with No Time for Goodbye to start with.

If they like Jack Reacher: Well, more than likely they are already reading him, but if not then the late Vince Flynns Mitch Rapp series is a great place to start. Other solid options include Nick Stone and Scot Harvath.

And if they’re not already reading Jack Reacher – drop everything and get them Killing Floor.

If they like James Patterson: Probably everyone has a book by James Patterson in their library. A tremendous author who has a lot of standalone novels as well as a series is Harlan Coben. If your reader likes mystery and thriller books then Coben is also a great option.

If you’re stuck for what book to buy them, my personal recommendation would be Hold Tight. That one was awesome.

If they like Harry Potter: Easily go with the series by Rick Riordan – Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The first book in the series is The Lightning Thief and it’s much loved by Harry Potter fans.

if they like The Hunger Games: There’s a ton of young adult fiction set in dystopian worlds out there. I’ve read almost all of it, and I would recommend getting them started on Divergent, the first novel in the Divergent Trilogy series.

Just make sure they don’t start reading it before Christmas dinner because trust me – they won’t be able to put it down!

If they are aged 8-13: That would be the perfect age group to get them on the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Those books are great – even as an adult reading to my kids, I enjoy them as well. These books are all being made into movies as well.

If they have a heartbeat: The Complete Calvin & Hobbes Collection is cheap as hell right now, and I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t love that series of books.

if they like autobiographies: Not sure about the females, but if you’re buying for a male then they need to get Mike Tyson: The Undisputed Truth in their collection. I just finished reading this and holy crap – just amazing.

Another book I really enjoyed was Johnny Cash: The Life.

If they’re a kid: Joke books are great. One of the best ones is this Knock Knock Jokes for Kids novel.

If They Like the Walking Dead: They’re probably a fan of zombies! Honestly I’ve been disappointed in a lot of books I read, so I’d play it safe and go with The Walking Dead Compendium.

if They Like Minecraft: My son is a huge Minecraft fan, so I bought a book for him to read and try. As soon as it arrived he started it and I never saw him for 3 whole days. He finally emerged from his room full of joy and glee at such a great book. No it wasn’t Playboy; it was Invasion of the Overworld.

If They Like Cooking: Ever searched for cook books online? Yeah…there’s quite a few. One really good book that is popular right now is The Pioneer Woman Cooks. Can’t go wrong with that. And be sure to try the Dr. Pepper Pulled Pork. Holy crap that is good stuff.

Whew – well that should get you started – but please ask for any advice in the comments. We’re a group of book lovers and we’ll be able to help you out.
