Talon & Chantry are two intersecting Western adventure family sagas by American author Louis L’Amour. The Chantrys emigrated to the United States from Ireland, fighting alongside the Sacketts in the American Revolution. The Talons left Quebec to settle in the American West. In another connection to the Sackett family, Em Talon was born a Sackett.

The Chantry series began in 1971 with the novel The Ferguson Rifle and ended in 1978 with Fair Blows the Wind, totalling five novels in the series. The Talon series consists of three novels, published between 1975 and 1981. The series begins with The Man from the Broken Hills and ends with Milo Talon. North to the Rails should be the last book, chronologically, of the Chantry books. The main character is a grown up Tom Chantry, who was probably 12 or so in “Borden Chantry”. Borden Chantry had to be the 1870s given the conversation between Chantry and Tyrel Sackett. That would place “North To The Rails” probably in the mid to late 1880s. “Over the Dry Side” takes place somewhere around 1866 given Doby’s statement about the fast draw being unfamiliar in the year in the area they lived, as well as statements about no one else yet having come to live in the area. So the Chantry books, in chronological order, would be:

    Fair Blows The Wind
    The Ferguson Rifle
    Over The Dry Side
    Borden Chantry
    North To The Rails

You Need to have the Ferguson Rifle Chronologically prior to Borden Chantry.
Also, very heavy Chantry presence in Ride the River featuring Echo Sackett and Lots of TALON in Ride the Dark Trail in which Logan Sackett defends the EMPTY (MT) ranch of Em (Sackett) Talon and Milo and his brother show up after Logan puts a message out that they are needed at home.

i sure wish that this was simple….trying to figure out what order to read the Talon and Chantry books is a real chore. i wish someone would just have a straight forward answer. and why in the heck did LL write something and then later write something that would go before what he wrote. i don’t understand.
    help….k.

I’d say the best way is to just read them in publication order if unsure. I find that is the best way.
