Expectations were high for the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins‘ book The Hunger Games, but it more than lived up to every one of them. The first in the trilogy was able to pull in a cool $155 million, making it the third biggest opening weekend of all time, behind the final Harry Potter film and Dark Knight.

Of course, Harry Potter and Batman were already established. For a comparison, the first Twilight movie – obviously not a sequel – made $69.6 on its first weekend.

“This is the birth of a franchise. To launch in this fashion is mindboggling,” said David Spitz, head of distribution at Lionsgate.
