James Herriot is the pen name of English author James Alfred Wight (1916-1995), who wrote about his experiences working as a vet. He had always wanted to write, but his time was consumed by his work. Eventually, his wife challenged him to do it. Because the veterinary community frowned upon professionals advertising their practices through writing, he decided to write under his pen name of James Herriot. He is best known for his book All Creatures Great and Small and its follow-ups. Mike Carey is an English author of horror, fantasy and thriller novels as well as being a comic book writer and screenwriter. He writes the Felix Castor series. Mike grew up interested in comic books, which he wrote and drew for his younger brother. He studied English at St. Peter’s College, Oxford and went onto a 15 year-long career as a teacher. When that was done, he switched careers to being a comic book writer. When she was 10, Eugenia decided that she wanted to be a writer. She changed her mind and went to get into dentistry, but after a couple of years, she decided to switch careers to become a writer. Ann Patchett is an American author of literary fiction novels. Although born in Los Angeles, she grew up and still lives in Nashville, Tennessee. After she graduated from a private Catholic high school, Ann attended Sarah Lawrence College where she took writing classes alongside Allan Gurganus, Russell Banks, and Grace Paley. She then went to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Patchett worked for the magazine Seventeen for nine years, where she mostly wrote non-fiction, although a low percentage of her articles were actually used in the magazine.
