Order of P.L. Travers Books
P.L. Travers (1899-1996) was an Australian-English author of children’s books. She is best known for creating Mary Poppins. Travers began getting her poems published as a teenager in multiple publications. At the same time, she was also making a name for herself as an actress. After touring Australia and New Zealand, she left Australia for England in 1924. It would be after settling in England that she would begin writing Mary Poppins stories. Travers’ story was made into the movie Saving Mr. Banks, where she was portrayed by Emma Thompson (opposite Tom Hanks as Walt Disney). (more…)
Order of Voyages Extraordinaires Books
Voyages Extraordinaires is a series of adventure novels by French novelist Jules Verne. The series is made up of unconnected journeys and adventures by various people. The editor, Pierre-Jules Hetzel, said that the idea of the series was “to outline all the geographical, geological, physical, and astronomical knowledge amassed by modern science and to recount, in an entertaining and picturesque format … the history of the universe.” The books are made with extreme addition to detail, combined with a love for exploration. Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French author of adventure and science fiction novels, in addition to being a poet and a playwright. He is best known for his Voyages Extraordinaires series, which makes up the vast majority of his work. His work is not meant to be science fiction, although he is considered to be one of the foremost pioneers of the genre. Although he was not a scientist or an inventor, he wrote about space, air and underwater travel before such the forms of transportation were out of their infancies (or in the case of space travel, created). Mark Sennen is an English author of crime thriller novels. He writes the D.I. Charlotte Savage series. Mark was born and raised in the British county of Surrey, and spent some of his teenage years in Shropshire. Living in the middle of nowhere, he would have to travel forty miles roundtrip in order to go to the movies. Mark went to the University of Birmingham, where he studied Cultural Studies. After abandoning a Ph.D, he worked as a farmer, drummer and computer programmer. Mark has since converted his programming suite into a writer’s room, where he writes nearly full-time and programs on the side. Order of Dominick Dunne Books
Dominick Dunne (1925-2009) was an American author and journalist, as well as being a Hollywood producer. Following studying at Williams College and serving in the Second World War, Dominick spent some time in New York before settling in to Hollywood, directing the TV series Playhouse 90 and becoming vice president of Four Star Pictures. Although he quickly became well-known for his parties rather than his work and became an alcoholic and a drug addict. In 1979, he left for Oregon and became an author, thereby reinventing himself. After his daughter, actress Dominique Dunne, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Dunne wrote an article for Vanity Fair about the ordeal. Her killer only served two and a half years. Dominick passed away in August 2009 while living in Manhattan, New York and was buried in Hadlyme, Connecticut. (more…)
