Mary Monroe is an American author of African-American fiction novels. She is the author of the God Don’t Like Ugly series and the Mama Ruby series. Mary grew up the daughter of sharecroppers in Alabama and was the only member of her family to graduate from high school. Instead of attending college or taking formal writing classes, she taught herself the writing craft by writing short stories ever since she was four years old. After graduating from Duke University, Steven joined the United States Marines. After that, he worked as a copywriter, teacher, truck driver, bartender, oilfield roustabout, mental hospital attendant and fruit-picker. Fyodor Dostoevsky [or Dostoyevsky] (1821-1881) was a Russian author of novels, short stories and essays, in addition to being a journalist and philosopher. His works explore the psychology of 19th-century Russian society. Fyodor Dostoevsky was born in Moscow and read fairy tales and legends both by Russian and non-Russian authors. In 1849, he was arrested due to his involvement with the literary discussion group Petrashevsky Circle. Fyodor and others were sentenced to die, but at the last moment, a note from Tsar Nicholas I was delivered, dropping the sentence down to four years of hard labour in Siberia. His health worsened during this time, eventually being diagnosed with epilepsy. Along with Leo Tolstoy, Dostoevsky is considered one of the most influential authors of the Golden Age of Russian literature. (more…)

Philip St. Ives is the protagonist in a series of hardboiled crime fiction/mystery novels by American novelist Ross Thomas (originally as Oliver Bleeck). Philip St. Ives is a private investigator, but unlike many hardboiled detectives, he doesn’t work out of a crappy office, drink cheap liquor or work in a horrible, corrupt city. Instead, he travels the world taking cases in the United States, Europe and wherever else someone needs him. Ross Thomas (1926-1995) was an American author of crime fiction, mystery and thriller novels. He wrote the Mac McCorkle, Philip St. Ives (as Oliver Bleeck) and Arthur Case Wu series. Thomas served during World War II in the Philippines. He then worked in public relations, with the Armed Forces Network, as a union spokesman and a political strategist before finally settling on his career as an author. His thrillers would delve into the inner workings of politics. Thomas passed away due to lung cancer in Santa Monica, California. He was 69 years old. (more…)
